Bull run a success despite poor weather
Current News Des Flynn - 26th July 2010
The first Bull Run took place on Saturday last from Kenmare Pier to The Bull Rock and back. Nine boats took part with seven boats making the full trip to the Bull Rock. The weather en-route was nasty with a heavy swell off Dursey Island and around The Bull Rock. The trip to the Bull took 90 minutes at an average speed of 24.6knts an hour. One boat encountered a prop problem and had to make for Westcove. Another boat went with them for safety. The remaining seven boats continued on the journey and arrived at The Bull.
The rock is majestic in every sense. It rises 83 meters from sea level and is noticeable by a natural tunnel through the centre at sea level. The lighthouse was built in 1889 with a number of Keepers Houses and supply houses built like Lego into the cliff. Various upgrades took place over the following years with the latest addition of Solar Power added in October 2000. In March 1991 the lighthouse was automated and the last Keeper withdrawn from service. The original houses on the rock have fallen into disrepair but a series of steps and ladder lead to sea level where on a calm day it is possible to land on the island.
Some of the boats on The Bull Run for Fun went through the The Bull tunnel before returning to Kilmacillogue for a snack! A superb BBQ was waiting the boats in Star Outdoors on their return to Kenmare.
The next Bull Run for Fun will take place on Easter Sunday 2011 and July 23rd 2011.
