Posted on June 10th, 2010 by Des Flynn
The Brook Lane Hotel in Kenmare is delighted to announce the arrival to the Kingdom of the Cork City Jazz Band. The Jazz Band have been playing for over 30 years and are without doubt the best known Dixieland band in the south. The Cork City Jazz Band has been invited to play all over the world – from Belgium to New York – and have performed with such greats as Kenny Ball and Acker Bilk.
Having recently come to the end of an entertaining and remarkable 25 year regular Sunday slot in Kinsale, they are now set to thrill the Kerry crowds on Sunday afternoons. The Cork City Jazz Band’s founding players evolved from other bands in the Cork area and only three of the original remain, namely, Marco Petrassi, Billy Crosbie and Gerry Walsh.
Performing at the Brook Lane Hotel each Sunday are..…
Michael O’Brien – drums and vocals
Marco Petrassi – trumpet and vocals
Peter Rooney – guitar, banjo, and vocals
Gerry Walsh – keyboards and vocals
The show begins at 3pm on Sundays and finishes at 6pm.

Bridgestone Guides: Ramblings on Kenmare
Posted on May 12th, 2010 by Des Flynn

A couple of weekend days in Kenmare confirms the town’s status as the most food-orientated town in the country. The following are stray thoughts about what makes it special…
Taking tea; put together The Truffle Pig in its smart new Henry Street address, An Cupan Tae, Jam, and Manuela Goeb’s Breadcrumb Bakery with its neat new tables and chairs, and Kenmare offers a brilliant selection of cutting edge places in which to take tea or coffee. Best of all, and typical of the town, they are All Different: The Breadcrumb rustic, An Cupan traditional and chintzy, Truffle Pig slick and smart, Jam bustling and laid back. Quite wonderful.
On Saturday morning, we headed off from just past the abandoned church west of Moll’s Gap and walked the seven miles back over the hill into Kenmare. The sun shone, the clouds were magnificent, the trees alternated between Pan’s Labyrinth ruined stumps to Lord of the Rings magical embellishments, and the walk took forever because our kids said “Take a picture of me here!” and “Take a picture of me here!”, and “Take a picture of me here”. Seven miles of the Sublime.
John McKenna of the Bridgestone Guides muses on what makes Kenmare a special destination in this blog post: http://bestofbridgestone.com/blog/index.html

Positive review of Cork / Swansea ferry
Posted on April 17th, 2010 by Des Flynn

The new ferry from Swansea to Cork by Fastnet Lines seems to have relaunched with little publicity for some reason. You don’t see many ads for it, in Ireland or the UK, compared to some of the other leading ferry services such as Irish Ferries or Stena Lines or P&O Ireland. Which might explain why I was one of about thirty foot passengers on our trip home to Ireland, (three of those were my husband and children). And then a volcano erupted and suddenly people started to take notice of all the ferries crossing European waters. Some of us were lucky enough to know them already
Catherine Mack has a positive review of the Cork/Swansea ferry service (with one or two photos):

Straddling the border between rival neighbours Cork and Kerry, Knockboy is the tallest peak in the Rebel County – but puny by Kerry standards. All the same, TONY DOHERTY enjoys its charms
Nice Irish Times article about walking on Knockboy, about 10 miles from Kenmare.

USA Today: Ring of Kerry and Skelligs among “Ireland’s best-kept secrets”
Posted on March 15th, 2010 by Des Flynn
Ring of Kerry: Medieval ruins, sandy beaches, lakes, mountains, a lush forest, and a jagged coastline all call the Ring of Kerry home. Part of the Iveragh Peninsula, it’s 110 miles of pure beauty.
Skellig Michael: Just eight miles off the coast of Portmagee and towering more than 700 feet above the water, you will find the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Skellig Michael, which houses a well-preserved sixth century monastic settlement.
Dingle Peninsula: Consistently voted one of the most beautiful places on earth, the Dingle Peninsula wins the hearts of so many with its lush landscape, which includes narrow cliff-side roads, mountain ranges, and sandy beaches.
Although they suggest you base yourself in Killarney for a visit to the Ring of Kerry (those who know stay in Kenmare!!!), 3 out of 10 of Ireland’s “Best Kept Secrets” are in the beautiful Kingdom of Kerry.
So if you’re thinking of visiting the Emerald Isle this year, you should definitely make Kerry number one on your to-do list!

Prints of Kenmare / Gap of Dunloe / Killarney / Glengarriff from 1890-1900s
Posted on March 14th, 2010 by Des Flynn
Published primarily from the 1890s to 1910s, these prints were created by the Photoglob Company in Zürich, Switzerland, and the Detroit Publishing Company in Michigan. The richly colored images look like photographs but are actually ink-based photolithographs, usually 6.5 x 9 inches.
Like postcards, the photochroms feature subjects that appeal to travelers, including landscapes, architecture, street scenes, and daily life and culture. The prints were sold as souvenirs and often collected in albums or framed for display.
The Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division assembled its collection from two sources that provided prints in mint condition. In 1985, the prints of Europe and the Middle East were purchased from the Galerie Muriset in Switzerland. In 2004, Howard L. Gottlieb generously donated the North American views.

Rally of the lakes 2010 – Molls Gap Video Preview
Posted on March 14th, 2010 by Des Flynn
The Rally of The Lakes 2010 takes place from the 30th April to 2nd May, with the pinnacle of the event being a run up Molls Gap from Killarney, ending near Kenmare town.
This tricky piece of road is renowned as one of the toughest rally stages in Ireland, and passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in the country.
This year the event only has one run of this famous stage, so the atmosphere at the Gap should be one to savour, with thousands of spectators gathering to watch.
To give an early peek at the flavour of the event, here’s a video of ex World Rally Champion Colin McRae tackling the stage in 2008.

Sailing past the Skelligs – some great photographs
Posted on March 9th, 2010 by Des Flynn

We headed into Derrynane for the night, one of my favourite anchorages, and a favourite of Daniel O Connell the liberator and many a romantic yachtsman. As we were approaching the transits for entry to the harbour we were treated to a magnificent sunset between the Scarrif Island and the Scelligs as the sun formed a huge pink and orange ball with magnificent reds stretching out over the islands. The photographs above are a memory but can not replicate the sheer beauty and exhilaration of what we saw.
The West Cork Sailing and Powerboating Centre Blog published some beautiful photos of the Skelligs as seen from the sea.

Local business responds to western bypass proposals
Posted on March 9th, 2010 by Des Flynn
Tourism is Kenmare’s major business, in fact virtually its only business. Encouraging
tourists to bypass the town would have serious effects on the ratepayers and the
commercial life of the town. Currently Kenmare Town has more unoccupied business
premises than ever before. A bypass would certainly add to this problem resulting in the
closure of further commercial operations and resulting in serious job losses for Kenmare
Town.
A local business has asked me to publish a response to the proposal of an western bypass in Kenmare. Here it is for download in PDF format. The pdf contains some interesting statistics.
However, the views herein are not necessarily the views of all chamber members!

San Fransisco Chronicle: Base yourself in Kenmare
Posted on March 6th, 2010 by Des Flynn

One of Ireland’s most popular destinations is the Iveragh Peninsula — known to shamrock-lovers everywhere as “The Ring of Kerry.” The Ring, lassoed by a winding coastal road through a mountainous, lake-splattered region, is undeniably scenic. Visitors since Victorian times have been drawn to this evocative chunk of the Emerald Isle, where mysterious ancient ring forts stand sentinel on mossy hillsides.
It seems like every tour bus in Ireland makes the ritual loop around the Ring, using the bustling and famous tourist town of Killarney as a springboard. I skip Killarney, whose main attraction is its transit connections for those without cars. Instead, rent a car and use as your home base the tidy town of Kenmare (yes, it’s actually won Ireland’s “Tidy Town” award).
As I pull into Kenmare, the lush green landscape seems to glow as the sun sets. While the ancient sights are fascinating and the history is educational, the best reason to come here is the eternal beauty of the Irish landscape.
Rick Steves writes in the San Fransisco Chronicle about the Ring of Kerry and why you should base yourself in the wonderful town of Kenmare when visiting:

Lime Tree chef strikes it big in Hartford, Connecticut
Posted on February 28th, 2010 by Des Flynn

STEP into the Polytechnic ON20 Restaurant, an excellent, earth-toned eatery on the 20th floor of the Hartford [Connecticut] Steam Boiler Building, and two thoughts occur simultaneously. Why haven’t I heard more about this place? And, what do I have to do to get one of those window tables?
One might well call the food New American — it is inventive and inclusive enough. But the executive chef, Noel Jones, is an Irishman from Killorglin, County Kerry; he was the executive chef at the Lime Tree Restaurant in Kenmare, County Kerry, when the restaurant received its Michelin rating, and his food has a European bent.
ON20 is a terrific place for a celebration, or just a drink with a view at happy hour. From the house-made breads to the final plate of sweets, the food is not only exceptional but surprisingly affordable. And as for those window seats, they’re there for the asking; just request one with your reservation.
Favourable review from the NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/28/nyregion/28dinect.html
